Embarrassing Middle School Moments

13 Mar

In honor of “#throwbackthursday” we’re going to take it back to the 90’s/early 2000’s today…the good ol’ middle school days.

Much of what I remember about middle school can be summed up in one word: awkward.

I was definitely not in the “popular” crowd, and remember feeling like a loser at times…but I made some of my best friends in middle school, and we have made a lot of great memories throughout the years. So I guess I can’t complain too much!

So let’s dive into some of my most embarrassing moments…

Spraining Someone’s Ankle

We were in gym class playing indoor soccer when this fateful incident happened. One of the “popular” boys was dribbling the soccer ball up the court when I decided this was my chance to show off and make myself noticed. I sprinted after him and in my attempt to steal the ball, I slide tackled him. He fell and started groaning in pain…I felt so bad! But I felt even worse the next day when he showed up to school with crutches. Major fail.

Being Awful At Basketball

I played on a Rec basketball team for my town, and it was my first year playing.

My coach was a young guy (at the time he was like 18-19 probably), and his sister also played on the team. Both of them were way too competitive. At least in my opinion…for a rec team…and us being 7th graders…

So whatever, I was mainly a benchwarmer. It’s cool, I knew I wasn’t that great but I made sure to try as hard as I could in practice and continue to get better. I even was given an award for never skipping practice! Then you know what happened? For one of the more important games towards the end of the season, the coach’s sister told me the WRONG game location! She was hoping I wouldn’t show up to the game (so I wouldn’t have to play), but thankfully my friend (who is still my best friend to this day) told me the truth, and the right location. Talk about humiliating…

Pretending To Be A “Skater Chick”

Yup, I went through a “skater” phase. My guy friends were all skaters and I wanted to impress them and learn cool tricks too. Yeah, it never happened, but I tried to dress the part.

PacSun (back then it was still Pacific Sunwear!) was my favorite store, and I loved my black Vans with the pink stripe. My friend Nicole and I were also obsessed with the song “Sk8er Boi” by Avril Lavigne. Hey, I still like listening to some of her old stuff…

Awkward School Dances

Need I say more? I don’t think so. But I will. One time, for some school dance, I asked my guy friend to go with me – which took a lot of courage! I remember my friend was on 3-way call with me as I asked him. She was creepily hanging out on the line and he had no idea. Remember when that was a thing? Anyway, he said yes and we were all OMG!! Then a few days later he broke the news that he actually asked a girl he liked to go with him…

It’s okay though because I still give him a hard time about it now and then 😉

(Ignore my awful texting skills.)

And here’s a photo I found from a random school dance. I think this might have actually been freshman year of high school. Check out my sweet shoes!

I’m sure there are way more embarrassing moments that occurred. Actually, I know there were. Maybe I blocked them all out. High school was way less awkward and I feel like I came into my own. Here’s a picture from graduation:

A Note On Friendships

Like I mentioned in the beginning, I made some of my best friends in middle school. My very best friends in the world are the two girls in the previous two pictures. I met Nicole (the girl in the dance picture) on the school bus. We had assigned seats, and we were put together. She didn’t like me because she thought I was a loser…but we ended up being BFF and still are. It was fate!

I met Laura (graduation pic) in 7th grade because we were paired up for a group project. She also didn’t like me too much (and I couldn’t stand her) but by the end of the project we were best buds. She’s also the one who told me about the basketball game. I would trust these girls with anything, and I can’t believe we have been friends for 14+ years! I’m glad that during a time where I sometimes felt alone, loser-ish, and different, that I met them and could share so much with them.

Okay, sentimental stuff over 😉 Now, for goodness sake let’s end with a current picture!

Me and Dan in Atlantic City for Laura’s birthday 2 weekends ago 🙂

Much better.

Would you consider yourself having been in the “popular” crowd? That phrase makes me laugh; I can’t believe that’s how we used to categorize people!

Favorite school dance?
