Marathon Monday

Hi all! Won’t be posting today because I’m currently on the course at th Boston Marathon. It’s a beautiful day!

Wish all the runners have an amazing race!

Embarrassing Middle School Moments

13 Mar

In honor of “#throwbackthursday” we’re going to take it back to the 90’s/early 2000’s today…the good ol’ middle school days.

Much of what I remember about middle school can be summed up in one word: awkward.

I was definitely not in the “popular” crowd, and remember feeling like a loser at times…but I made some of my best friends in middle school, and we have made a lot of great memories throughout the years. So I guess I can’t complain too much!

So let’s dive into some of my most embarrassing moments…

Spraining Someone’s Ankle

We were in gym class playing indoor soccer when this fateful incident happened. One of the “popular” boys was dribbling the soccer ball up the court when I decided this was my chance to show off and make myself noticed. I sprinted after him and in my attempt to steal the ball, I slide tackled him. He fell and started groaning in pain…I felt so bad! But I felt even worse the next day when he showed up to school with crutches. Major fail.

Being Awful At Basketball

I played on a Rec basketball team for my town, and it was my first year playing.

My coach was a young guy (at the time he was like 18-19 probably), and his sister also played on the team. Both of them were way too competitive. At least in my opinion…for a rec team…and us being 7th graders…

So whatever, I was mainly a benchwarmer. It’s cool, I knew I wasn’t that great but I made sure to try as hard as I could in practice and continue to get better. I even was given an award for never skipping practice! Then you know what happened? For one of the more important games towards the end of the season, the coach’s sister told me the WRONG game location! She was hoping I wouldn’t show up to the game (so I wouldn’t have to play), but thankfully my friend (who is still my best friend to this day) told me the truth, and the right location. Talk about humiliating…

Pretending To Be A “Skater Chick”

Yup, I went through a “skater” phase. My guy friends were all skaters and I wanted to impress them and learn cool tricks too. Yeah, it never happened, but I tried to dress the part.

PacSun (back then it was still Pacific Sunwear!) was my favorite store, and I loved my black Vans with the pink stripe. My friend Nicole and I were also obsessed with the song “Sk8er Boi” by Avril Lavigne. Hey, I still like listening to some of her old stuff…

Awkward School Dances

Need I say more? I don’t think so. But I will. One time, for some school dance, I asked my guy friend to go with me – which took a lot of courage! I remember my friend was on 3-way call with me as I asked him. She was creepily hanging out on the line and he had no idea. Remember when that was a thing? Anyway, he said yes and we were all OMG!! Then a few days later he broke the news that he actually asked a girl he liked to go with him…

It’s okay though because I still give him a hard time about it now and then 😉

(Ignore my awful texting skills.)

And here’s a photo I found from a random school dance. I think this might have actually been freshman year of high school. Check out my sweet shoes!

I’m sure there are way more embarrassing moments that occurred. Actually, I know there were. Maybe I blocked them all out. High school was way less awkward and I feel like I came into my own. Here’s a picture from graduation:

A Note On Friendships

Like I mentioned in the beginning, I made some of my best friends in middle school. My very best friends in the world are the two girls in the previous two pictures. I met Nicole (the girl in the dance picture) on the school bus. We had assigned seats, and we were put together. She didn’t like me because she thought I was a loser…but we ended up being BFF and still are. It was fate!

I met Laura (graduation pic) in 7th grade because we were paired up for a group project. She also didn’t like me too much (and I couldn’t stand her) but by the end of the project we were best buds. She’s also the one who told me about the basketball game. I would trust these girls with anything, and I can’t believe we have been friends for 14+ years! I’m glad that during a time where I sometimes felt alone, loser-ish, and different, that I met them and could share so much with them.

Okay, sentimental stuff over 😉 Now, for goodness sake let’s end with a current picture!

Me and Dan in Atlantic City for Laura’s birthday 2 weekends ago 🙂

Much better.

Do you have any vivid middle school/high school memories? Tell me your stories in the comments!

Would you consider yourself having been in the “popular” crowd? That phrase makes me laugh; I can’t believe that’s how we used to categorize people!

Motivational Monday!

10 Mar

Yay Monday! Another week! Part of me isn’t a huge fan of Mondays, but part of me likes the thought of a whole new week to get s*%t done 😉

I’ve been thinking about how I need to get back to running. I went for a run with my dad on Saturday (only 1.5 miles) and felt great. He said he’d like to train for a 5K with me, so we will be starting now that it’s getting warmer and lighter out in the evenings.

My running goals are to PR in the 5K and half marathon this year. I wanted to run a half marathon on April 27, but that’s not happening. I have barely been running and it’s not realistic. It kind of made me feel down about my running, and how I lost basically everything I worked up to for the NYC Marathon, which is why I liked this quote I found:

motivational quote

Despite being out of shape with running, I really want to gain my fitness back. Yes, it sucks that 3 miles is tough but I will do what I can. I want to start building a base, and then do a solid 5K training plan. Plus, I’m planning on running a half-marathon this July in Paraguay! I also think all of the strength training I’ve been doing will help with speed – I just hit my squat PR on Saturday!!

So we’ll see how it goes…I know I’ve written about wanting to get back to running, but it really has been difficult with the weather. Now that it’s warm, I can’t wait to get back out there. I just didn’t feel the need to force myself to run outside when I didn’t have a concrete goal in mind.

What are your spring goals?

Do you run 5K races?

Motivational Monday!

24 Feb

Wow, the last week of February! Is it spring yet? Slowly getting closer and closer…

Here’s a quote I found on Tumblr over the weekend and love:

Sometimes, we let the negatives affect us and get us down. We focus on them. Dwell on them. Stress out. I have definitely been guilty of this. But recently I’ve been feeling more like, “Whatever happens happens. It’s for the best.” I know things will work out the way they are supposed to. Plus, like the quote says, what would life be without a few negatives?? You will look back on most things and laugh, or view them as a learning experience.

Is there an experience that you can look back upon and realize you shouldn’t have stressed out so much about it?

Do you believe everything happens as it should? Or that we make our own destiny? I think I believe a little bit of both 🙂

Lucky Stars Designs Update

20 Feb

As I wrote about in December, my mom and I have been working hard to create tote bags and duffels for our Etsy shop. We wanted to create cute, patterned (and waterproof) bags as gym bags, because most are just plain colors…and who doesn’t want to have a nice bag for the gym 😉

We mainly created our store to help a charity close to our hearts – Manitos. Manitos aids children diagnosed with cancer in our native country of Paraguay. 10% of each purchase goes back to them, and we can’t wait to visit the hospital they are partnered with when we travel to Paraguay in July.

Since starting in December, we have actually added a few new & different types of items to our store, so I wanted to give you all an update!

We finally finished our first duffel bag, which is water resistant material inside and outside – which is perfect for gym clothes. I love the pattern and wish I could keep it for myself 🙂

Shop here.

And we decided to add a few new items. My mom has her own business already as an interior decorator. She creates custom draperies, pillows, covers and more for her clients, so she decided why not make pillows for Lucky Stars Designs? Here are 2 that are in our shop currently:

She also has made foam/cork boards for clients, so we decided to make one for the shop. It’s perfect for race memorabilia, or photos in general.

Shop here.

Lastly, I decided to start creating printables. I love quotes (as noted by my “Motivational Monday” posts), and my day-job is as a graphic/marketing designer, so I figured I’d work on some of those, while also increasing my portfolio 😉 Here is one of my favorite quotes that is actually hanging in my own living room:

Shop here.

My mom and I have decided to use our skills (hers in interior design work and mine in graphic design) to be social entrepreneurs. Our main goal is to sell our wares so we can continue sending checks to Manitos. If you’re not interested in anything in our store, that’s totally okay! Perhaps consider making a donation directly to Manitos if you’d like.

You can shop through our entire store here.

I hope we can continue to grow and help where we can. I’m really excited for our trip to Paraguay and Brazil this summer…now time to start saving money!

What patterns are your favorite? I’m always open to ideas and requests! If you have a specific request, we can certainly work with you to create it.

Are you going anywhere this summer? What is your dream country you’d like to visit?

Social Media Week + Blogging Concentrated NYC

18 Feb

It’s Social Media Week! I went last year with my dad and loved it. We only went 1 day, but attended a bunch of events. That’s our plan this year as well. We will be heading into NYC on Thursday, and have 2 definite events on our docket, and one that we are waitlisted for.

If you have a business, or work in social media, this is an awesome event to attend. There are paid events, and you can buy an all-access pass as well. But there are also free events. The ones we signed up for are free. Here’s what we plan on attending this year:

  • Start-Up Pitch Doctors – We want to go hear pitches and network with other entrepreneurs.
  • Go Ahead In Digital: Analytics – We are on the waitlist but I really hope we get in! Tracking analytics is so important, and something I’m still learning about.
  • Exploring Deep Creativity – It sounds cool and I’m always looking for inspiration for new ideas.

I’m sure I’ll be live-tweeting, so if you’re interested in what I learn, follow me on Twitter!

Blogging Concentrated NYC

I am really, really excited for this event in March. I have wanted to go to a blogging conference for a while, and found this one by simply looking up “blogging conferences nyc.”

I am in the process of redesigning my blog, and am working to continue to grow it. Health, fitness and writing are my passions. This is a 1 day event that will teach you a whole lot about blogging, monetization, and more. Here are some topics they will cover:

  • Image Marketing: The Formula
  • Anatomy of a Perfect Post
  • Ebook Strategy: Pricing, Empire building, and where
  • The Vital Connection Between Brands and your Audience
  • Advanced Keyword Research
  • How to build a revenue stream, then grow it through measurement
  • …and much more.

Most of what I know has been self-taught…through Google 😛 , so I’m really excited to go learn from other bloggers who have been successful, and learn more about things I have no clue about (eBooks, connecting with brands, etc.). They also have various events in different cities, if you’re not near the NYC location.

You can find out more about the event & register on their website.* Let me know if you decide to go, and perhaps we can meet in person!

*Disclaimer: This is a referral link provided to me by Blogging Concentrated. If you register, I do get commission. All thoughts and opinions are my own 🙂

Have you ever been to a blogging conference? Which one and what did you think?

What topic would you like to learn more about?

Anyone going to Social Media Week?

Happy Weekend!

1 Feb

The weekend is finally here! I just saw this quote on a fellow Instagrammer’s profile and just had to share it.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! I’m excited because temps will be close to 50s so I can run outside!

Enjoy the weekend and look for the positives 🙂

What are you doing this weekend?

Fun Treadmill Workout

28 Jan

It’s cold outside. I’m starting to run again this week, but I would like to stay inside. I’ve ran in the cold before but recently I am just not feeling it. It’s just been too cold and I’m afraid of slipping on ice/snow.

So I came up with something to keep from getting bored on the treadmill. You know how in spin classes you usually increase resistance or speed when the music tempo picks up? Well, that’s what you’ll do in this workout!

Start by warming up for 5-10 minutes, then jog at whatever your easy pace is. Turn your music on & up.

With each song that passes, every time the chorus comes up (which is usually the most upbeat portion of the song), either increase your incline, or increase your speed.

For example, if you’re running at 5.5, when the chorus comes on, increase to 5.8-6.0 until the chorus is over. Once it’s over, decrease back to an easy jog. Switch it up by increasing your incline on one song, and increasing speed on another song. Repeat for however long you want your run to be!

Let me know if you try it out! Do you have a treadmill boredom buster workout? Please share in the comments 🙂

NJ Devils vs. NY Rangers Stadium Series Recap

28 Jan

This weekend, my boyfriend and I went to the Stadium Series at Yankee Stadium. It’s part of the NHL, and a couple hockey teams throughout the US have been playing outdoors as part of this series.

Isn’t it crazy that the L.A. Kings played outside in 60-ish degree weather? Pretty cool that they could keep the ice frozen.

Anyways, Dan really wanted to go because the Devils were playing their big rival, the Rangers. His parents got him tickets for his birthday and he asked me to go. Initially, I was like ehhhhhhh…it’s going to be REALLY cold! It was about 20 degrees.

We got on the PATH train around 9 am and headed into the city. It was pretty easy getting there, and we got to the Bronx around 10:30. We thought we’d meet up with a few people at one of the bars outside of the stadium, but none of them were serving alcohol! Apparently, they can’t serve alcohol before noon on Sundays.

But the weird thing is, this one bar, Stan’s was serving. We tried to get in but it was waayyyy too packed. We couldn’t even move, and getting a drink probably would have taken 30 minutes (or more).

Anyone out there know why one bar is allowed to serve but others aren’t?

So we ended up just getting food then going into the stadium. When we got in, there were about 30 minutes left until game time, but then the game got delayed because of sun glare on the ice. My thoughts were, “Cool, more waiting in the freezing cold!” Stadiums should have like little coffee shops where you can go and have a hot beverage while waiting 😉

As luck would have it, we were surrounded by Rangers fans, so that wasn’t fun. Especially since the Devils lost 7-3. But we had pretty good seats and could see all of the action.

I wasn’t TOO cold throughout, but towards the end I started getting colder, and it started snowing. I went to the bathroom to warm up my feet and this very nice woman gave me hand warmers to put in my shoes. That was definitely a lifesaver! My toes felt frozen.

Overall, it was a really cool experience. I mean, how often do you get to watch an outdoor hockey game. I just made sure to bundle up: running tights, fleece pants, 3 layers on top, jacket, gloves, 2 socks.

I’m glad we got to go, and hopefully they continue the Stadium Series next year!

Are you a hockey fan? Who’s your team?

Have you been to an outdoor hockey game?

Happy Holidays!

28 Dec

I haven’t posted in about a week, but I’ve been pretty busy and enjoying time with family. My uncle who lives in Florida came up to visit us, and we haven’t seen him in about 7 years because he moved to Paraguay for a period of time. Since he’s the only family we have here in the US, it is great to be spending time with him!

As per Paraguayan (and other Latin countries do this as well) tradition, we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. We have a big dinner, and stay up until midnight to say Merry Christmas and open presents. I used to hate this as a kid because I wanted to open gifts on Christmas morning, so I’d just keep a few unopened for Christmas morning 😛

On Christmas Day, we have our own tradition of going into New York City to see the tree and walk around. Last year, we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge.

This year we just ended up visiting Rockefeller Center and the World Trade Center Memorial, because my uncle hadn’t seen it yet. The memorial is beautiful.

Rockefeller was absolutely packed…obviously. But we always like going to see the tree and snap a few pictures even if it is almost impossible to navigate through the crowds.

Since then, I’ve just been relaxing since I’m off from work. I apologize for the lack of posts!

Yesterday, Dan and I went to the Devils game. It was a fun time, although they lost 😦

Who else loves hockey??

Did you have a few days off for the holidays? What did you do?

Do you have New Years plans?
